The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle

The Engine of Improvement: PDCA

The Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle (also known as the Deming Cycle or Shewhart Cycle) is a four-stage iterative method for continuous improvement in business processes.

1. Plan Define the problem or opportunity clearly. Gather baseline data, analyze the root cause using tools like the 5 Whys, and formulate a targeted hypothesis and action plan.

2. Do Implement the plan on a small, controlled scale. By testing changes in a pilot rather than company-wide, you limit risks while gathering authentic operational feedback.

3. Check (Study) Analyze the results of the pilot against your initial expectations and baseline metrics. Did the change produce the expected improvement? What unintended consequences emerged?

4. Act If the experiment was successful, standardize the new procedure, update training documents, and roll it out more widely. If it failed, study what you learned, adjust your approach, and begin a new cycle.

Continuous Repetition PDCA is not a one-time project—it is an ongoing spiral of upward learning. Each completed cycle establishes a new baseline from which the next improvement begins.
